Praying and Working for Christian Unity, for Families
Sept 28, 2026
Christians from different traditions often meet in the ordinary life of a community: at a prayer service, a wedding, a funeral, a school event, or a shared effort to serve neighbors. These encounters offer opportunities for friendship and cooperation. They can also raise sincere questions about how we worship together while respecting the beliefs and practices of each tradition.
The Ecumenical Guidelines for the Dioceses of Texas offer a Catholic perspective on those questions. Rooted in the Church’s commitment to Christian unity, the guidelines encourage common prayer, dialogue, and service marked by openness and mutual respect. They also explain important distinctions, including the difference between an ecumenical service among Christians and an interfaith service that includes people of other religions.
The document addresses practical situations such as shared worship, sacramental celebrations, mixed marriages, Christian burials, and cooperation in schools, health facilities, and civic life. Its preface reminds readers that the search for unity belongs to the Christian vocation, and that prayer is at the heart of that work.
These guidelines were issued in 2008 for the dioceses of Texas. We share them as a helpful resource for reflection and conversation. Because particular pastoral questions can depend on current Church norms and local diocesan direction, please consult your pastor or diocesan office when planning a service or making a sacramental decision.
