1. 1. Catholic Joy. A young boy confounds Bishop Sheen. As Bishop Sheen is beatified on Sept. 26, I am reminded how he would tell stories against himself. He was scheduled to give a major presentation at a hotel in Philadelphia, PA. He left the hotel for fresh air, and got lost. He stopped a young boy and asked how to get back to the hotel. The boy gave him directions and then asked what he was doing at the hotel. Bishop Sheen replied that he was giving a talk on how to find God. The boy exclaimed: You can’t even find the hotel!
Rachel Lu has a significant article about him, “The Great American Evangelist,” America magazine, Sept. 2026, pp. 26-31. I will try to put it on the MUD website.
2. Update on Fr. Ron Rolheiser O.M.I.’s health. In a Facebook e-letter on Sept. 16, 2026, Fr. Ron wrote that he has been chemo-free for 3 months, but on Sept. 17 the chemo begins again through Feb. 2027. Good news is that the tumors are shrinking and the next months of treatment should not be as brutal as the last. He can continue his ministry which does not involve travel from San Antonio, TX, and appreciates prayers.
